Business CCTV tends to fail at the worst moment. The face is too small to identify, the loading bay sits in a blind spot, or the footage was overwritten last week. Commercial CCTV installers for sites that can't afford gaps
When CCTV lets you down, it’s facilities, operations or the estates team who answer for it. Here’s how we deal with the usual problems.
- Footage that can’t identify anyone. We specify camera type and position for what each area needs to capture, from a visitor at reception to a vehicle at the gate.
- Compliance gaps. Cameras overlooking neighbours, no signs, retention left on factory settings. We site cameras to avoid unnecessarily overlooking neighbouring property or public space, install in line with your DPIA (and advise if you still need one), and set signage and retention at handover.
- Disruption. Live warehouses, shops open for trading and occupied offices can’t stop for cable runs, so installation is planned around your shifts and operations.
- Too many contractors. Britannia designs, installs, monitors and maintains commercial CCTV, and it can work with your intruder alarm, access control and fire alarm monitoring.
CCTV regulations your system has to meet
Business CCTV is a data protection matter first. Under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 you’re the data controller, and ICO guidance expects:
- a documented lawful basis (usually legitimate interests, or public task for public bodies) and a DPIA before cameras go live
- signs people see before they enter the recorded area, saying who runs the system, why, and how to contact you
- retention set by purpose, not by how much the recorder holds
- audio recording off by default, with footage stored securely and access restricted
The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 changed two things. Subject access requests are limited to what a reasonable and proportionate search finds, and since 19 June 2026 you need a complaints process that acknowledges complaints within 30 days.
The current application guidelines for video surveillance are BS EN IEC 62676-4:2025. In England and Wales, councils and other relevant authorities must have regard to the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice; other operators are encouraged to follow its 12 principles. Facial recognition processes biometric, special category data and needs its own legal condition, so raise it at survey if you’re considering it.

Case study: Houghton Regis Leisure Centre
A new-build leisure complex with a 25m eight-lane pool, a 120-station gym, studios and squash courts. After a competitive tender and negotiation, Britannia secured the contract for its complete suite of fire and security systems.
We installed 62 Hikvision cameras inside and out, including PTZ units, alongside the fire alarm, Grade 3 intruder alarm, access control, disabled refuge and PA systems. More than 15,000 metres of cable went in at first fix, and every system was commissioned, tested and handed over within an eight-month programme.

As a rule of thumb, cover falls to the points that matter most to your business rather than a set count of cameras.
