Intruder alarm installers who design for the response

Whoever signs off an intruder alarm usually answers to an insurer, a board or a council. They need a system that meets the policy, doesn’t cry wolf and gets a response.

  • The right grade. Most commercial properties fall within Grades 2 to 3, and we generally recommend a Grade 3 wired system: built to resist intruders who know how alarms work.
  • Designed against false alarms. Every component installed correctly to minimise false activations.
  • Wired or wireless. We recommend wired for most commercial premises. Wireless is often more practical for retrofits where running cable is difficult.
  • Integrated where it helps. A triggered alarm can prompt CCTV to focus on the area, working alongside access control and monitoring.
  • Handed over properly. The system is fully tested, and your team is shown how to operate it confidently.

Intruder alarm standards, police response and insurance

Commercial intruder alarms are designed to BS EN 50131-1, which sets four security grades, applied in the UK through PD 6662:2017. Grade 2 suits low-to-medium risk, Grade 3 medium-to-high, and Grade 4 high-risk sites facing well-planned attacks.

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, police response is governed by the NPCC Security Systems Policy (2026). To qualify, a system needs:

  • installation, maintenance and monitoring by a company certified by a UKAS-accredited body (in practice NSI or SSAIB) and on the police force’s compliant list
  • design to PD 6662:2017, with alarm confirmation to BS 8243
  • monitoring by an alarm receiving centre certified to BS EN 50518 (or the older BS 5979)
  • a URN (£70.68 inc VAT from 1 April 2026) and at least two keyholders who can attend within 20 minutes. A keysafe isn’t an acceptable alternative

Grade 1 systems, and any system that isn’t remotely monitored, can’t get police response through a URN. Police Scotland applies its own rules.

The analogue phone network switches off on 31 January 2027, so new systems should signal over IP or mobile, ideally dual-path. Many insurers require a maintained intruder alarm, and some specify who installs and maintains it, so check your policy wording before you specify.

Case study: Yaxley Fire Station

A £1 million redevelopment of a historic on-call fire station in Yaxley, Peterborough, adding a lecture room, office, welfare facilities, an appliance bay and a smoke house training facility.

Britannia installed a site-wide intruder alarm on a Honeywell control panel, with motion detectors, door contacts and sounders, alongside a Category L1 Gent fire alarm protecting the new office areas and appliance bay. Both systems came from one contractor, with a one-year warranty.

We deliver Grade 3 at scale too: the Honeywell Galaxy system we installed at Houghton Regis Leisure Centre has more than 80 devices.

Intruder Alarm System Installation Frequently Asked Questions

    1. What is commercial intruder alarm installation?
    >

Commercial intruder alarm installation is the professional fitting of a security system in business premises. It involves placing sensors, control panels, and alarms to detect unauthorised entry, protect assets, and provide peace of mind through early warning and deterrence.

    2. Where are commercial intruder alarms typically needed?
    >

Intruder alarms are essential for offices, retail stores, warehouses, schools, and industrial facilities. Any premises containing valuable assets, sensitive data, or staff working outside normal hours benefits from a reliable system to prevent break-ins and protect operations.

    3. Why are commercial intruder alarms important?
    >

They deter criminal activity, reduce the risk of theft, and minimise potential damage to property. Alarms also ensure faster response from security teams or police, helping businesses stay secure, compliant with insurance requirements, and resilient against disruption.

    4. Who is responsible for installing an intruder alarm system?
    >

The business owner, landlord, or responsible person must ensure security measures are in place. Professional installation by accredited engineers is recommended to meet standards, reduce false alarms, and maximise protection for employees, property, and assets.

    5. How do intruder alarms improve overall business security?
    >

Intruder alarms form part of a wider security strategy, working alongside CCTV, access control, and monitoring. They provide visible deterrence, immediate alerts, and reassurance that the premises are safeguarded around the clock, even when unoccupied.
